Supervised CE does not always mean sitting in a classroom
The current Oregon continuing education rule allows supervised education to be delivered in person or through interactive distance learning. The rule describes interactive distance learning as a live online class or a course that requires participants to interact with the instructor during the course.
That interaction may happen through live conversation, an electronic discussion board, email, a social group, or another direct communication method. The important distinction is that the learner can communicate with the instructor as part of completing the course.
What a supervised course should include
Oregon's rule calls supervised education formal learning. A strong supervised course should make the following easy to identify:
- A qualified instructor or provider
- A course syllabus
- Specific competencies or learning objectives
- A method for participant questions and instructor interaction
- A method of assessment, such as discussion, activities, or a quiz
- Attendance or participation verification
- A certificate showing the course title, date, and CE hours
The rule lists several possible providers, including a licensed or accredited massage school, a provider recognized by a professional organization, an accredited college, or a licensed healthcare provider. An Oregon LMT is included in the licensed healthcare provider category.
Why live Zoom classes can qualify
A live Zoom course can create the direct interaction Oregon requires. Students can ask questions, respond to prompts, discuss scenarios, and receive clarification in real time. The instructor can also verify attendance and participation.
Simply watching a prerecorded video without required instructor interaction is generally better understood as unsupervised education. Prerecorded material can still be valuable and may count toward the unsupervised portion of Oregon's requirements when the topic and provider qualify.
Remember the four required ethics hours
Oregon requires at least 4 hours in professional ethics, boundaries, or communication. Those 4 hours must be supervised and are part of the minimum 8 supervised hours. A clinical technique course can help with the supervised-hour total, but it does not replace the required ethics, boundaries, or communication education unless that content is clearly included and documented.
What to save after a live online course
Keep your completion certificate for at least five years. It is also smart to save the syllabus, course description, instructor information, and payment receipt. These records make it easier to explain how the course fits Oregon's CE categories if you are selected for an audit.
