Before you begin: This checklist summarizes current Oregon information in plain language. Verify your dates and individual requirements with the Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists before submitting your renewal.

1. Confirm your renewal date

The Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists FAQ says renewal is due by the first day of the month in which your license expires. The online renewal becomes available before the due date. Check your license record early so you know the exact deadline that applies to you.

Do not wait until the final day to discover that a certificate is missing, your BLS card has expired, or a course does not fit the category you expected.

2. Total your continuing education hours

Oregon LMTs generally need 25 continuing education hours during each renewal period. Review each certificate and confirm that the completion date falls within the correct period.

Your Oregon CE count

  • 25 total continuing education hours
  • At least 8 supervised hours
  • At least 4 supervised hours in professional ethics, boundaries, or communication
  • At least 1 hour in cultural competency
  • The Oregon Pain Management Commission module completed as required

The remaining hours may come from other approved subjects and learning formats. Read the current Oregon continuing education rule for the complete list of acceptable topics and methods.

3. Separate supervised and unsupervised hours

Create two totals instead of placing every course into one list. Oregon requires at least 8 supervised hours and allows up to 17 of the 25 hours to be unsupervised.

Supervised education includes formal learning with an instructor. It may be delivered in person or through interactive distance learning, including a live online class. A supervised course should include a syllabus with competencies and a method of assessment.

4. Check your ethics, boundaries, and communication hours

At least 4 hours must cover professional ethics, boundaries, or communication. These hours must be supervised. Label them clearly in your CE tracker so they are not confused with general supervised technique courses.

5. Confirm cultural competency and pain management

The current rule requires at least 1 hour in cultural competency. It also requires the Oregon Pain Management Commission module at least once by the licensee's next required CE reporting period. The pain management module may be repeated and counted again.

6. Make sure your Basic Life Support card is current

Oregon LMTs must hold a current Basic Life Support card. Check the expiration date before you renew. Save a clear copy of the front and back if both sides contain important information.

7. Organize your certificates

For every course, keep the certificate of completion and enough information to identify the provider, instructor, topic, date, and number of hours. It is also smart to save the syllabus and course description, especially for supervised online courses.

A simple file name makes records easier to find: year-month-day, course title, provider, and hours. Store a backup copy somewhere separate from your primary device.

8. Keep records for at least five years

The Oregon rule requires licensees to maintain continuing education records for at least five years. The Board audits a portion of renewals and may request copies of CE documentation. Keep the records even after your renewal has been approved.

9. Review the first-renewal exception

The continuing education requirement does not apply to an LMT's first license renewal. The rule states that CE taken during the first renewal period must be submitted during the second renewal period. Contact the Board if you are unsure which renewal is considered your first.

10. Submit early and save confirmation

Review every entry before submitting your renewal. After submission, save the confirmation page, payment receipt, and any email from the Board. Add them to the same folder as your CE records.

A simple renewal timeline

Planning ahead gives you time to choose continuing education because it is useful, not simply because the deadline is close.
